Stretching Your Lodging Dollars

In addition to the extensive lists and write-ups in the latest edition are boxes containing helpful information.  By all means, use this advice for your New York trip as well as other destinations.

What is a high-demand night at one hotel may be a low-demand night at another. Depending on the timing, you may be able to stay in a more luxurious hotel.

Generally rates are cheapest on Sunday, while the most expensive nights are Wednesday and Thursday. Rates are typically lowest in January, February, late April, and May.

Rates may go down closer to your stay. Call before your cancellation deadline to see if that is the case, and then book again at the lower rate. Rather than have a glut of empty rooms, many hotels will drastically lower rates. Bargain with the hotel’s desk clerk, not with whoever answers the hotel’s offsite 800 number.

Try the large chains’ more budget-friendly brands, such as Hampton Inn (owned by Hilton), Fairfield Inn by Marriott, and Four Points by Sheraton. These outfits are significantly less expensive than the upscale names in the chain.

Stay in less expensive neighborhoods. The subway is likely just a few minutes away. Often the money saved is well worth the short trip.
